In a new effort coordinated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), institutions are joining together to address the challenges faced by the field of cancer research in the translation of research findings into clinical management. The International Collaboration for Cancer Classification and Research (IC3R) constitutes a unique forum for evidence generation, standard-setting, and best practice recommendations, and its work will have several important impacts on the future of tumour classification and cancer research:
• Implementation of an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) accreditation for research laboratories
• Application of comparable quality management methods and best practices in relevant institutions
• International agreement on standards for reporting and scientific publishing in the field
• Adapted evidence levels for the assessment of existing evidence
